This film is about being an artist far from home, or, as one cleaning lady put it (according to Tarkovsky: correctly) about a man who treats women badly and suffers in so doing (perhaps she said it about Zerkalo, too). The writer Andrei is collecting material about an Italian composer, but the plot serves only as a scaffold for what is actually important, which in Tarkovsky's work was always connected with the search for the intellectual and spiritual specifics of the Russian nation and the state of its soul.
